Healthy Chips If You Are On a Low-Fat, Low-Calorie, Keto or High Protein Diet
Raina Tian

Since you are here, you must love chips. The family size Dorito’s from the parties, the tall tube Pringles to munch along the movies, or the baby bag Lay’s to go with the lunch sandwich. Yah, they are so great for so many occasions.
But again, since you are here, I hope these nutrition facts from our beloved products won’t be too jaw dropping. Oh, I should also point out these are just for one big handful of chips, so yah multiply it by at lease 5 if you usually open a big bag and eat as time goes away.

Right off the bat, we can’t seem to get away with high fat and high carbs (net carbs), plus if you are trying to incorporate more protein and fibers in your diet for a fixed amount of calories, these crunchy deliciousness will not be your friend. Well, the good news is we’ve got better options on the market now. However, I encourage you to realize that the labels on the packages can be misleading. A product labeled “Keto” can easily contain a few grams of net carbs per serving, a low calorie ice cream can have tons of sugars just like the regular ones. Packagings are marketing tricks, and your source of information should always be the nutrition facts and ingredient list. So be ware.
I should also clarify that although there are some better chips, but they aren’t perfect. If you choose the lowest calories, it might be having too much carbs; if you get the highest amount of protein, it might be too heavily processed. So we still need to make smart choice to enjoy these goodness without ruining our overall wellness goals.
In this post, I’ll analyze the nutrition facts of some chip alternatives on the market that are branded “healthy”, and give final recommendations for 5 common wellness goals. Before I start, let’s also acknowledge that the best thing to do is always having a balanced main diet, but if your craving for chips is driving you crazy, I hope these tips will help you.
1. Absolutely Zero Fat
It’s almost inevitable to use some oil in the chip-making process, but bare beet chips is an exception. The sea salt flavor has absolutely no fat. It’s also very low-calorie (98 calories every 28g serving) and has the most fibers (5.5 grams) as far as I’ve seen. Plus the ingredients are so clean — beets and sea salt, period. So if fat is your only concern and you are trying to eat as wholesome as possible, it is a great choice for you. But be careful about the sugar, 10.5 grams each serving, even though it’s not added sugar, it’s a large amount for a small handful of chips.
2 .Lowest Calories
If you have only that much calorie budget left for the day and you just insanely crave for some chips. I recommend Brad’s Veggie Chips for you - 80 calories for each 28g serving. Their kale veggie chip is not so typical and surely more appetizing. Aside from kales, you get carrots and apples to balance the taste and super food like flax seeds to boost the nutrient. It’s cooked in extra virgin olive oil and seasoned with Himalayan salt - yum! And it’s a great choice if you are on a vegan diet!
3. Protein Boom
This might sound strange to some of you, but beef chips do exist. If meats are one of your protein sources, I highly recommend you check out Kalahari Crips Air Dried Beef Chips. The original flavor is packed with 20 grams of protein each 28g serving! Similar to some jerkies on the market, the total calories and fat are low - each bag you get 100 calories and 2 grams of fat, but unlike a lot of beef jerkies, there is no sugar in it, and the total carbs (and net carbs) is under 1 gram! However, the cholesterol is also the highest amount all the other chips we are going to review today.
So if cholesterol is a concern, or you only consume protein from plant-based food, I’ve got any recommendation - Safe + Fair Pea Protein Chips. This product reminds me a lot of popchips, but the macros are so much better. The sea salt flavor has 10 grams of plant-based protein each 28g serving. The calories and total carbs are also on the lower end - 110 calories and 9 grams of total carbs (as well as net carbs). The ingredient list is pretty pronounceable as well!
4. Keto Friendly
For our keto friends out there, you might like Kalahari Crips Air Dried Beef Chips already since it only has less than 1 gram of net carbs each 28g serving. But you might not be a huge fan of a total 2 grams of fat. So if you prefer to have higher fat, I have another pick for you - Whisps All-Natural Cheese Crisps. With also only 1 gram of total carbs and net carbs, the Parmesan flavor has 13 grams of protein, 10 grams of fat, and 150 calories.
What if you are vegan? Check out Brad’s Veggie Keto Crisps. The everything flavor is also a low-calorie option, with 84 calories in each 28g serving, you get 3 grams of protein, 5.5 grams of fat and 3 grams of net carbs. Because they are making the crips with many good seeds ad vegetables, there is also 3.5 grams of fibers, bringing the total carb to 6.5 grams.
5. Best Over-all
I know some of you don’t strictly follow any particular diet, just generally want to choose a better product when you can. You also want to be able to share a bag of chips with friends and families who might be vegan or allergic to gluten or nuts. Most of all, you still want it to taste good, nothing funky or bizarre, just plain old chip taste.
So here we go, Beanito Chips. They look just like the good old tortilla chips and come with so many familiar flavors - BBQ, Sea Salt, Nacho, Cajun, Spicy lime, etc. But untraditionally, they are vegan, gluten-free, non GMO, and packed with 5 grams plant-based protein, 4 grams fibers, with only 130 calories. If you want to take it up a notch, choose the sea salt flavor, as it has a pretty clean ingredient list.
There you have it, my recommendations for 5 common wellness goals. I hope you found something satisfies you already, but if I understand how diets can be complicated sometimes. So if you wanted to see a few more options and decide for yourself, here is the list of products I reviewed for this post.
